Art in Ketchun
Overview

The City of Ketchum is home to a thriving arts community that has funded and created a nationally-recognized summer music festival and writers’ conference, a state-of-the-art theater and a public arts program that reflects the community’s enthusiasm and appreciation for all forms of art. Ketchum  currently hosts over 12 art galleries including an accredited museum.

The mission of the Ketchum Arts Commission (KAC) is to integrate arts and culture into the community's life The KAC was created in 2009 by the City of Ketchum to:

Cover Art

Ketchum Arts Commission members are volunteers appointed by the Mayor. These individuals fulfill specific roles on the commission; their appointments are based upon KAC members' majority recommendation to the Mayor.

All commissioners are active in and passionate about the arts and have particular interest in providing art appreciation opportunities for the public. Commission members are professional artists, architects, builders, engineers and art professionals, or simply have an appreciation for artwork's positive and compelling contribution to humanity.

The City’s art collection includes the works of both regional and internationally renowned artists, working in a variety of media and supports the work of emerging and established artists. The City Art Collection is funded by private donations as well as a Percent for Art Ordinance, which stipulates that five percent of capital infrastructure project costs be allocated for the integration of art pertaining to the project. Five percent for art is among the highest percentage in the country.

The Ketchum Arts Commission's initiatives range from exhibiting and maintaining the city's art collection to curating rotating exhibitions and performances that are free and open to the public.

Cover Art is a public art exhibition whereby infrastructure is covered with a  vinyl wrap of digitally transferredoriginal two-dimensional work. Projects are sponsored by donors in most cases. The project was initiated in 2013.

Performance Art consists of exhibitions by emerging or professional performers. Performance artists may have gotten their start here in the Wood River Valley and have advanced to professional and successful careers.

The Ketchum Arts Commission's performance art endeavors are always free and open to the public (suggested donations are always welcome!) and occasionally showcase local galleries, theaters, and public spaces such as the Ketchum Town Square.

The Ketchum Arts Commission is a commission of the city and is guided by policies and documents adopted by the Ketchum City Council.

Snow Removal and Dangers

The Ketchum Street Department would like area residents to be aware of some of the hazards associated with snow removal operations. When snow removal equipment is out working, please understand that the operator's visibility is limited due to equipment design and weather conditions. For this reason:

Snow Bank along the roadside
Children Playing in Snow in the Right of Way

Children are fascinated by heavy equipment; however, they do not understand the power generated by the equipment or the damage the equipment can cause. When a snowplow or snowblower comes down the street, children are drawn to the street to watch. What they don't realize is if they get too close they could be injured. Snow being moved from the street to the right of way could easily bury them or knock them over.

KETCHUM, IDAHO – Ketchum’s new Mayor and City Council have planned an Open House for residents, business owners, employees, customers and others using downtown parking.

“Whether it’s questions about paid parking lots or two-hour time limits, it’s essential to understand the impact of Ketchum’s parking policies before considering ways to better manage the issue in the future,” Mayor Neil Bradshaw said.

KETCHUM, IDAHO – City Council took its first step in finding a new home for City administrative offices and police department.

Last night, Council approved spending $25,000 to secure an option-to-buy an existing building in the City’s downtown. The building—with three stories and more than 11,000 square feet—would meet the City’s needs, now and into the future, Mayor Neil Bradshaw said.

Purchasing the option immediately is important because it secures the right to purchase the building and allows time for the City to get community input.

KETCHUM, IDAHO – The head of the City of Ketchum’s Planning and Building Department will be leaving his post next month to tackle a new set of career challenges as the top administrator with the City of Ammon.

Micah Austin, who began working for Ketchum in January 2015, notified city leaders of his decision earlier this week. He will begin working in Ammon on March 29.

KETCHUM, IDAHO – “Saving Snow,” a 53-minute documentary on the heartbreaking story of our winters on life support, will be shown in Ketchum at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, in the Limelight Hotel’s Silver Creek Room. The screening is free to the public.

“I am delighted that the City of Ketchum is sponsoring the screening of ‘Saving Snow,’” said Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “I hope many people come out to learn about the challenges that face the ski industry due to climate change.”

KETCHUM, Idaho – The City of Ketchum, Idaho is inviting artists to showcase their work for the sixth, semiannual “Art in City Hall” exhibition. The selected artwork will be featured in the City Council meeting room at Ketchum City Hall. Selected artists will receive a $350 stipend, and there is no fee to apply. The deadline for submissions is April 6.

KETCHUM, Idaho – The City of Ketchum and its partners invite the community to celebrate the original mountain town’s ski-film icon, Warren Miller. The celebration takes place on Thursday, March 15, on Main Street between Sun Valley Road and Second Street. The Main Street tribute party kicks off the seventh annual Sun Valley Film Festival.

The evening warms up with lively après social time from 7-9 p.m. in the SVFF Café Artois, located in the former Cornerstone Bar & Grill at the corner of Main and Second Streets.

KETCHUM, Idaho (03/12/2018) – The City of Ketchum has hired John Gaeddert, who for more than two decades has been involved in planning and zoning projects in the Wood River Valley, as the new Director of the city’s Planning and Building Department.

Gaeddert is President and Principal Planner for the Corporation for Land Planning & Engineering, a Haileybased company Gaeddert started 25 years ago.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Ketchum has been named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.

This is the fourteenth year in a row that Ketchum has received the honor. Requirement include having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

KETCHUM, Idaho – The Warm Springs Day Lodge site at the base of Bald Mountain remains an active, secured fire scene with no public access.

The Ketchum Fire Department is mopping up and managing hot spots.

All agencies have completed their investigations. The findings must first be presented to the Sun Valley Resort; a process known as disclosure and release. Once this occurs, the site will be released to the Sun Valley Resort.

View of Edelweiss Park

Edelweiss is a small park located off the bike path and at the end of Fourth street. A sculpture by Joan Barrantes named Complementaros was added to this park in 2014.

View of Farnlun Park

Farnlun Park occupies a narrow strip of land adjacent to the Ketchum-Sun Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant. The park land and amenities were donated to the city by the Oscar Smith Farnlun family in 2009. An interpretive sign at the park tells the story of the historic cattle ranching family. The area is bordered by Meadow Circle, River Ranch Road and the Wood River Trail bike path at the far southern reaches of the city. Fly angler access points to the world famous free-stone, catch-and-release Big Wood River may be found off Meadow Circle and River Ranch Road.

View of Forest Service Park

Forest Service Park is located one block west of Main Street on the south edge of downtown Ketchum. It is a quiet location with stunning views and Engelmann spruce trees that were planted in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps when the site was a U.S. Forest Service compound. The property was acquired by the city of Ketchum through a citizen-driven effort. The park is frequented by locals on their lunch breaks and dog walks. Visitors and locals alike enjoy its historic feel.

Guy Coles Skate Park

Conveniently situated across from the Wood River YMCA en route to Warm Springs base area, Guy Coles Skate Park was named after a particularly enthusiastic public recreation proponent, Mayor Guy Coles. While this concrete skate park, designed and built by Portland, Oregon-based Dreamland Skate Parks is a bit smaller than its Hailey counterpart, the fun and challenging features are just as popular. Skateboarders of all ages and abilities rock this park, which includes two large bowls, a vertical wall and rails.

Ketchum Bike Park

In partnership with Scott USA, the City of Ketchum contracted with Alpine Bike Parks in 2009 to design and construct one of the first public pump tracks in the country. A vacant dirt lot, owned by the Blaine County School District, was transformed into a premier bike facility designed to teach modern mountain bike techniques, such as pumping, cornering and jumping. There is water and a tool locker onsite for continued volunteer maintenance. To access the tools, please contact the Recreation Department at 208.726.7820.

Take a short hike to the top of Knob Hill to see some of the best views in town. Just a few blocks from the downtown core, sit and relax on the park benches or have lunch at a picnic table. The trail is wheelchair accessible. Knob Hill Natural Area was donated to the city by one of its favorite sons and spun honey aficionado, Buzz Bradshaw.

Lucy Loken Park

Lucy Loken Park starts at the south end of Walnut Avenue and runs downhill to Trail Creek. A stairway made of Montana Moss Rock invites visitors into the half-acre park. There is wheelchair access to the park via a gravel path off of the east end of First Street. Loken features a variety of maples, pines and other young trees, a riparian zone along the creek and a pathway that leads visitors to a spot overlooking the creek. Suitable for picnicking or a respite from the city, it offers some attractive views of Bald Mountain.

Ore Wagon Museum

The Ore Wagon Museum is home to the ore wagons donated to the City by the Lewis family. When the first Wagon Days Parade was held in 1958, a few dozen wagons and teams rolled down Main Street. The “Big Hitch,” as the Lewis Ore Wagons are called, thundered down the road as they have in every Wagon Days Parade since. The Lewis Ore Wagons are the only of their kind in existence. These massive wagons were larger than an average freight wagon and built to withstand the extreme stresses when loaded with ore to travel the road over Trail Creek Summit.

Christina Potters Ice Rink

The Christina Potters Outdoor Ice Rink is the largest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. It is a non-refrigerated human made rink that measures almost two acres. The rink is entirely free for the public. The rink is open for about a two-month period each winter from around the December holidays through what we locals call "Presidents' Week" in about mid-February. The rink's operation and availability is entirely weather dependent.

The mission of the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency is straightforward: to implement the projects identified in the Ketchum Urban Renewal Plan, which is developed and adopted by the Ketchum City Council.  All urban renewal agencies in Idaho (and many throughout the country) have missions similar to the KURA, thus ensuring that their work is coordinated with the planning priorities developed by their local governments.

The program outlined in the Ketchum Urban Renewal Plan emphasizes public improvements and facilities that may enable:

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency Commissioners meet every month on the third Monday of the month. When a federal holiday conflicts with this schedule, the KURA will meet on the third Tuesday of the month.  All meetings are held at Ketchum City Hall at 2:00 p.m.  The meetings are open to the public.  The Board also meets at other times throughout the year as necessary.  Those meetings are announced in advance and are also open to the public.

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency (KURA) was formed in 2006 by the city government to focus on downtown revitalization, community housing, and public and private investments. Like other urban renewal agencies around the country, the KURA is an independent organization with its own budget, by-laws and Board of Commissioners.

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency is governed by seven commissioners – two Ketchum City Council members and five additional members from the community.  This mix of elected and non-elected officials is relatively common within urban renewal agencies around the country.  Today, the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency Commissioners include:

In 2006, the City of Ketchum formed the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency (KURA) to focus on downtown revitalization, community housing and public and private investments.

Holiday Tree Lighting Poster

KETCHUM, Idaho – Join us at Ketchum Town Square on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for the Holiday Lighting Ceremony featuring a very special guest: Santa Claus!

The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. with music on the Town Square stage featuring Caritas Chorale. The city will be serving cookies and cocoa.

Santa will arrive in typical style on a fire truck at 5 p.m. Together, with Mayor Neil Bradshaw, they will lead us in a countdown to light the Square.

Tax Increment Financing

The KURA, like most other urban renewal agencies around the country, is funded through a taxing concept called tax increment financing.  The basic idea is simple: future tax revenues pay for revitalization and redevelopment efforts.

Simultaneous with the development of the Urban Renewal Plan in 2006, the City identified those geographic areas of Ketchum that were in need of improvement.  Those sites were included in one urban renewal district, also known as the Revenue Allocation Area.  That Area includes properties generally in the downtown area and in Warm Springs, and was expanded in 2010 to include the property affiliated with the River Run Annexation.

Below you will find links to the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency Financial Reports:

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Plan was developed and adopted by the Ketchum City Council in 2006, and updated in 2010.  The KURA was then formed to implement the projects identified in the plan.  They focus on, but are not limited to, the following:

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency adopted these by-laws.  They guide the governance of the organization and can only be amended by a majority vote of the KURA Commissioners.

The KURA was established to fulfill the following for the Ketchum community:

4th Street Heritage Corridor Project
4th Street Heritage Corridor Project
Downtown Master Plan

The Downtown Master Plan is a key strategic document guiding the future development of our downtown.  This two-year planning process brought business and community members together to create a blueprint for the future.  It was this Downtown Master Plan that brought forward the concept of the creation of an urban renewal district in Ketchum.  Legacy projects resulting from the Downtown Master Plan include the Fourth Street Heritage Corridor, the Town Square, and Downtown Wayfinding/Signage.  The KURA contributed $92,450 of the $366,890 total cost of the Downtown Master Plan.

Ketchum/Sun Valley Visitors Center
Purchase of Strategic Downtown Properties

491 Sun Valley Road

In 2007, the KURA purchased two key properties, both adjacent to other land owned by the City of Ketchum.   491 Sun Valley Road, the old Mountain West Bank Building, created a key half-block of municipal ownership in downtown Ketchum.  Two of the four lots were owned by the City of Ketchum and the KURA purchased one additional vacant lot, and the lot that has become the home of the Ketchum/Sun Valley Visitors Center and Starbucks coffee shop.

Visitors Center Interior
419 Sun Valley Road Adaptive Re-Use

In 2011, the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency negotiated leases with two anchor tenants in the 491 Sun Valley Road building: the Ketchum/Sun Valley Visitors Center and Starbucks.  The KURA funded landlord improvements inside the building and adjacent to Sun Valley Road in 2011 in the amount of $141,000.  Tenant improvements were approximately 3 times this amount.  The space, which opened in November 2011, showcases an innovative blending of the community Visitors Center and a Starbucks cafe.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Idaho Housing and Finance Association (IHFA) announced its 2020 nine-percent Tax Credit awards. A project cost tiebreaker lost the round for one of the top scoring projects, the Bluebird Village community housing project.

Bluebird Village landed in the top scoring group of applicants under the Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP) Preference Points, yet it fell short due to a construction costs per unit tiebreaker driving the project out of range for funding availability.

On Thursday January 30, Fish and Game officers and local law enforcement were notified of a large mountain lion roaming in the Woodside subdivision in Hailey. Once located, the lion continued to run through many neighborhood yards, before taking refuge under a tree. The officers then attempted to haze the lion using rubber buck shot fired from a shotgun. The lion was not deterred by the hazing.

Due to the close proximity to dense neighborhood housing and public schools the decision to euthanize the lion was made in the interest of public safety of Hailey residents.

A paramedic from Ketchum Fire Department was flown in by helicopter and landed near the skier and extracted her without incident.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Networking connections were made, educational events were taught, and the community collaborated cohesively at the Ketchum Innovation Center (KIC). With a solid entrepreneurial spirit alive in Ketchum, KIC will be officially closing its doors on April 3rd, when its lease comes to an end. A multitude of factors led to this decision, but overall KIC is proud to be ending on a positive note.

Welcome to the 65th Annual Wagon Days Celebration

The City of Ketchum's flagship event pays homage to the mining era time when the town was founded.  The event centers around the Big Hitch Parade, one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country, featuring museum-quality carriages, carts, stagecoaches, riding clubs, and the grand finale, the Big Hitch, the historic Lewis Ore Wagons, pulled by a 20- mule team on a jerkline.

Due to COVID-19, there are no seat reservations at this time.

The cities of Ketchum and Sun Valley recognize “Celebrate Idaho Women’s Day”

KETCHUM, Idaho – Celebrate Idaho Women’s Day commemorates the centennial of the women’s right to vote and Idaho’s early role regarding women’s suffrage. The celebration will take place at noon on Friday, Mar. 13, at Ketchum Town Square.

“We celebrate the importance of women’s influence in our community every day,” said Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “And we’ll be ringing bells to join the rest of the state as we commemorate women’s suffrage.”

KETCHUM, IDAHO – The City of Ketchum invites residents and visitors to the Ketchum Rail Jam. This is a free event taking place on Saturday, Mar. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. Registration begins at 4 p.m.

Due to the recent mild temperatures and lack of snow, the event has moved from Town Square to First Ave., starting at 4th Street.

KETCHUM, IDAHO – As of this date, Idaho has no confirmed cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19). While the immediate risk to the public is still low, out of an abundance of caution the city of Ketchum is taking proactive steps in response to COVID-19.

Precautionary measures taken by the city include the cancellation of two upcoming events taking place on public property. The city will be evaluating all future events on public property to determine if they will be allowed.

In 1958, a few hundred spectators attended what would grow to become one of the largest non-motorized parades in the Pacific Northwest - The Wagon Days Big Hitch Parade! Today, over fifteen thousand people flock to Ketchum to watch this historical parade and celebrate the western heritage it represents. The parade features buggies, carriages and wagons, with the grand finale being the Lewis Ore Wagons and the Big Hitch. We are experiencing unprecedented times as COVID-19 impacts our community. The City of Ketchum has taken numerous actions to address the pandemic, but we have two requests of our community: Slow it Down and Do Your Part.

Slow It Down

Wagon Days

Our new Wagon Days website is coming soon!

Have a question in the meantime?

Contact us at info@wagondays.org

KETCHUM, Idaho – On Wednesday, Mar. 18, Mayor Neil Bradshaw approved a disaster declaration, finding that a local disaster emergency exists in the City of Ketchum.

The declaration will be in effect for 7 days unless extended by the City Council. A special meeting has been scheduled for Monday, Mar. 23, at 4 p.m. for City Council action. The meeting will be streamed live and can be viewed by visiting www.ketchumidaho.org/meetings.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has issued a Shelter in Place Order for Blaine County to slow the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus within the community.

Shelter in Place means all individuals should stay at home unless they need to perform essential activities or go to work to provide essential business and government services.

Keep calm and stay safer at home. From a vibrant town to a ghost town in a few days, the pandemic has rocked our community but not rocked our resolve. Significant steps have been taken to protect our citizens while keeping our town functioning for essential needs. With council approval on Monday, we will be adding an emergency ordinance that will allow us to implement additional measures to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Many questions – keep them coming. This unprecedented situation creates much uncertainty. That is to be expected. We have been asked a myriad of questions and have tried to answer them all in our FAQ section HERE. Please keep your questions coming. It helps us, and it helps others understand what is permitted, encouraged and forbidden during this fluid time.

Blaine County, IDAHO –  County and City officials are planning to put in place additional measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

These measures aim to reduce the amount of travel into and out of the County and limit community spread of the virus. These actions are in addition to those contained in the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Self-Isolation Order of March 20.

Highlights of the proposed actions are as follows:

Giant steps are what you take - to stem the COVID tide. We have asked you to do a lot already – now we are asking you all to take another giant step to stem the COVID tide. It will not be easy, but it will make a difference and it will not be for long.

These are the measures we will adopt (you can also read the full joint press release here):

KETCHUM, Idaho – On Friday, Mar. 27, Ketchum City Council approved the adoption of more restrictive measures to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) Order of Mar. 25.

Since the adoption of an emergency ordinance on Monday, Mar. 23, the City Council has the authority to adopt health orders tailored for Ketchum and more restrictive than the IDHW Order.

State-wide isolation order in place – we have taken it a little bit further. The Governor has issued a state-wide order to self-isolate that remains in effect until April 15. Click here to see the state order. We have taken that order and added a few additional restrictions that will hopefully help Slow it Down.

Resources are now available to employees and businesses that are impacted by COVID-19 precautions and regulations.  With the adoption of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) by the Federal Government, financial relief is available to employees who are no longer working and for businesses impacted by COVID-19 closures and business interruption.  The following provides information on the resources that are available.

We are in for a quiet couple of weeks … and that is a good thing. 14 days to Slow it Down and Do Our Part.

KETCHUM, Idaho – There is no time like the present to keep in touch with your neighbors.

On a regular, coronavirus pandemic day, restaurants, grocery stores and pharmacies continue to generously offer take-out and delivery for their customers.

While people are able to get food and prescriptions, it’s equally important to keep in communication with friends, family and neighbors who are sheltering in place.

Some residents, who may be elderly or living on their own, may be more vulnerable to the effects of the virus and become too sick to call for help.

*Please note that the City of Ketchum website is optimized in Google Chrome. If you are using another browser and are experiencing video interruptions, we recommend that you try using Chrome.

KETCHUM, Idaho – The Ketchum Fire Department and Blaine County Ambulance District have partnered with the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to conduct a study that includes antibody testing for residents of Blaine County.

The study will start with a random sample of 400 Blaine County residents to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 antibodies in symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals to determine how many asymptomatic, or silent, cases there are in the community.

You have a chance to help others.  We have just announced the start of a clinical study to test for COVID-19 antibodies in our community. Please CLICK HERE for the press release. The clinical study is part of a collaboration with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to help further the fight against COVID-19.

Commercial and residential construction and other services such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical and landscaping must meet the requirements in Ketchum Health Order 20-06, which became effective at 12:00 a.m. on November 24, 2020. All individuals performing work must certify they have read the Construction Site and Worker Standards and agree to comply at all times while on the job site.

The primary contractor or individual performing services must follow the steps below:

Time for some baby steps in our reopening plan. City Council met today (yes, they were working on a Saturday!) in a special council meeting to discuss the current Ketchum amendments to the State Isolation Order.

Blaine County COVID-19 EPI Curve

BLAINE COUNTY, Idaho – South Central Public Health District’s recent EPI Curve report shows declining numbers of new COVID-19 cases in Blaine County.

An EPI Curve is a statistical chart used in epidemiology to conceptualize the onset of a disease outbreak. This chart shows that the first positively tested patient in Blaine County first showed signs of symptoms on March 1.

While the numbers are encouraging, vigilance in social distancing and compliance with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Order must be maintained.

Data shows decline in COVID cases. The health of our valley is improving, and the volume of new COVID-19 cases in Blaine County is going down. CLICK HERE for the joint press release showing the EPI curve. This is tremendously encouraging, and a testament to the good work and thoughtful behavior of all. Furthermore, the medical facilities have stated they are handling the current patient loads. On a daily basis, only a handful of people are now coming in to get tested.

Confirmation that April 20 will see a resumption of construction activity. Today, City Council confirmed last week’s decision to permit construction, subject to strict construction standards. Before construction can be permitted, there are a number of requirements that must be met by contractors, landscapers and service providers. CLICK HERE for the forms and more information on all that is required to be ready for opening day.

We are now at a point where we must consider opening up our economy and social life in a responsible way. A way that reassures those concerned over the resurgence of the virus, while allowing others to put food on the table. A way that restores our lives and livelihoods, while managing the risk COVID presents.

Black bears in the Wood River Valley are already finding food rewards when roaming in neighborhoods, which can quickly lead to a food conditioned bear. Residents are urged to secure their household garbage to keep bears from getting a quick meal.

Residents south of Ketchum have been reporting black bears roaming their neighborhoods and getting into garbage cans and bird feeders. Since late April, four reports have come into Fish and Game about bears getting food rewards from residential garbage cans being left outside, and from bird seed and hummingbird feeders.

A message from Mayor Neil Bradshaw

As we go into our summer season the world has changed, and so must we. We have two major issues to address, our financial position and our branding as a tourist town. If we do it right, each will complement the other.

Prior to participation in the 2021 Summer Youth Recreation Program, please review, sign and return the following waiver: Youth Participation Waiver

KETCHUM, Idaho – The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences released preliminary results from the antibody study conducted in Blaine County last month. The results estimate that 23% of the county’s adult population has an antibody to the virus.

The rate of COVID infection in Blaine County was significant. Antibody prevalence was highest in Ketchum at 35%. This is one of the highest rates per capita in the nation. These results show that Ketchum bore the brunt of the disease.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Mayor Neil Bradshaw and City Council have appointed Jade Riley as Ketchum’s next city administrator. He joins the city on Aug. 31.

Riley is currently serving as Chief Operating Officer with the city of Boise. Prior to this position, he served as Chief of Staff for Boise Mayor David Bieter for over 16 years.

In his role as Boise Chief of Staff, Riley managed daily operations of twelve departments and 1,800 employees, developed long-term policy with elected officials and oversaw the development of the city’s $515 million budget.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Ketchum Police Chief Dave Kassner is retiring after 34 years on the job. His retirement will go into effect on August 31.

Kassner began his law enforcement career with the Ketchum Police Department in 1986. He became a member of the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office in 2009, when the City of Ketchum contracted with Blaine County for law enforcement services. Kassner was promoted to Chief of Police in 2014 and is a member of the Ketchum Traffic Authority.

In 2018, the City of Ketchum purchased a building at 191 5th Street in Ketchum, Idaho, for a new City Hall. All City operations are intended move to the new City Hall by spring 2021. The existing building at 191 5th Street was built in 1996. It is a 3-story building comprised of 15,575 square feet. The building is currently used as office space and is partially occupied.

KETCHUM, Idaho – Ketchum resident, Kathleen Phelan Britt, generously donated $10,000 to purchase face coverings for the citizens of Ketchum. Davis Embroidery and the City of Ketchum coordinated the effort and contributed to the cost.

The masks are available to the public, free of charge, and can be picked up at Ketchum City Hall and The Community Library.

“We are thankful for this donation,” said Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “This gesture reflects Kathleen’s concern for visitors, the citizens of Ketchum, and our frontline and service industry workers.”

KETCHUM, IDAHO – As the threat of wildfire danger continues to increase, Ketchum Fire Chief Bill McLaughlin has implemented Fire Restrictions on all public and private lands, roads and trails situated within the boundaries of the City of Ketchum.

Under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, the following acts are prohibited within the City of Ketchum on public and private lands, roads and trails:

Ketchum garbage dumped by bear

Black bears, some with cubs, continue to find unsecured residential garbage throughout the Wood River Valley leading to food-conditioned bears. During the early morning hours of August 17, a large sow and cub were found in the Warm Springs area, with the sow gaining access to at least four unsecured garbage cans. Blaine County deputies and a Fish and Game officer monitored the sow and cub throughout the early morning hours to encourage them to leave the neighborhood. Near daybreak, both bears wandered into the surrounding timber.

The City of Ketchum has a vacancy in our Facilities and Maintenance Department. If you enjoy the outdoors, join the City's team maintaining parks and other City properties, and assisting with events.

respondents are in support of the concept of closing 4th Street.

The survey was launched at the city’s Feedback on 4th event on Sept. 2, using a QR code for touchless access. It
was also distributed via the city website, in Word on the Street and in the Idaho Mountain Express.

The City of Ketchum would like to hear from community members, employers and employees throughout Ketchum and the Wood River Valley to best assess the area’s housing needs.

Survey results will assist the city’s consultant, Agnew::Beck, in developing appropriate housing strategies tailored to Ketchum as well as strategies to help solve the area’s housing needs.

The project’s goal is to develop an action plan to guide the next two to four years of future projects and initiatives that will lead to the development of more affordable housing options in Ketchum and the region.

Donations from the community reached the first threshold to purchase 65 acres of Warm Springs Ranch property.

The goal was met last week after raising $4.5 million from 330 donors, including a $1 million gift from a member of the campaign committee. The purchase price of the property is $9 million.

Residents and visitors will see lots of activity on Ketchum’s residential streets over the next few days.

This season’s first winter storm brought lots of excitement and very long hours for the Ketchum street crew.

The city adheres to a carefully laid out system for clearing the streets. Concentration on the downtown core left residential areas with a compacted icy base that is difficult to remove with traditional plowing.

Public comment is a vital part of the city’s decision making process for the residents of the City of Ketchum.  It provides a mechanism for the public to have their opinions and recommendations formally and publicly documented and is an opportunity for the Ketchum community to effect change and improve policies and operations.

There are only days left to meet the $1 million match on donations received by Dec. 31, which would lead to a $1 million reduction in the sales price of the Warm Springs Preserve property.

Match donations now total $807,572, leaving $192,428 needed to meet this critical goal.

The $1 million match was offered by a member of the Warm Springs Preserve campaign committee.

Through the generosity of 687 donors, the Warm Springs Preserve campaign committee and Spur Community Foundation, the Dec. 31, $6.5 million fundraising goal has been reached.

Thanks to the residents and visitors of our valley, donations and pledges have met the campaign committee member’s $1 million match, secured the $1 million price reduction offered by the property owner, and beat the year-end goal by over $1 million. The total raised since the start of the campaign is now $7,599,446.90.
