The cities of Ketchum and Sun Valley recognize “Celebrate Idaho Women’s Day”
KETCHUM, Idaho – Celebrate Idaho Women’s Day commemorates the centennial of the women’s right to vote and Idaho’s early role regarding women’s suffrage. The celebration will take place at noon on Friday, Mar. 13, at Ketchum Town Square.
“We celebrate the importance of women’s influence in our community every day,” said Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “And we’ll be ringing bells to join the rest of the state as we commemorate women’s suffrage.”
On Nov. 3, 1896, Idaho became the fourth state to give women the right to vote, joining the ranks of Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. This historical change in history took place long before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed on Aug. 18, 1920.
In 1915, Pennsylvania suffragists cast a replica Liberty Bell – known as the Justice Bell – as a symbol of their state’s suffrage efforts. They toured the Justice Bell through the counties with its clapper chained, vowing it would remain silent until they secured the right vote. One month after the adoption of the 19th Amendment, suffragists rang the bell in a grand celebration.
Idaho continues to honor and recognize the impact of women to Idahoans, both personally and professionally. In February this year, the Idaho Legislature established March 14 as Idaho Women’s Day. This date concurs with Mar. 14, 1891, when Idaho’s first State Legislature adopted the official use of Idaho’s state seal, the only state seal ever designed by a woman. Governor Brad Little has also proclaimed March 13, 2020 to be “Celebrate Idaho Women’s Day.”
“The City of Sun Valley is honored to be a part of the statewide commemoration and celebration of the centennial anniversary of the 19th amendment,” said Sun Valley Mayor Peter Hendricks. “Idaho can be proud that its courageous past made it the 4th state in our country to give women the right to vote and we will continue to work to advance women’s leadership and civic engagement throughout the City.”
