The City of Ketchum and Sun Valley Resort are inviting the community to the base of Roundhouse Express at River Run on Friday, Dec. 8 at 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the unveiling of the second Cover Art gondola car project. The Ketchum Arts Commission project was completed with support from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Mandala Gondola is the title of the artwork created by Boise artist Rachel Teannalach. The original artwork was transferred to a vinyl wrap, which was then applied to the gondola car. Windy City Arts of Hailey, Idaho created and applied the wrap.

The project was sponsored by Sue and Earl Cohen and Trish and Dave Wilson in celebration of the life of Joe Bauwens. Bauwens was involved in creating fine art photographic prints and played an active role in the Wood River Valley art community. Bauwen’s wife, Marybeth Flower, spent 5 years on the Ketchum Arts Commission and is now an advisory member.

“It’s exciting to see the Arts Commission continue to deliver such high-level projects in their 10th year of operation,” said Mayor Nina Jonas. “The city of Ketchum is grateful for their efforts and for the efforts of donors like the Cohens and the Wilsons, and what a wonderful tribute to Joe Bauwens.”

“So many people came together to help make this wonderful project happen. KAC member Adam Elias and advisory member Trina Peters were especially dedicated to shepherding the project through from the beginning,” said Ketchum Arts Commission Chair Courtney Gilbert. “We’re grateful to Sun Valley Resort for working with us on the project and for their role in the design process, as well as to our colleagues at the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, whose participation ensured that Rachel Teannalach’s beautiful images will be enjoyed by all who use the mountain and that they work in harmony with the natural landscape.”

The Ketchum Arts Commission is working on plans for a third gondola car Cover Art project for 2018.
